Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best known under her stage name, Queen Latifah. Her career as a musician actor, filmmaker and TV performer has earned the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her father and mother divorced when Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was born into the Baptist church, and attended Catholic high school located within Newark New Jersey. At the age of 8, her cousin gave her stage names Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah, 5-foot-10" tall forward on the high school team, was always tall. In her high school's play, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing in the fresh rap ladies. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's original group, which included a number of MCs and the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the song. The singer signed Latifah, and released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
